Introducing InvestMap Levels: Multiscale Data Aggregation and Custom Areas
Introduction
The visualization capabilities of InvestMap were previously limited to a single administrative scale—the municipality level. This restriction hindered the ability to analyze data aggregated over larger geographies such as clusters of municipalities, provinces, or the entire country. Users seeking insights beyond municipal boundaries had to resort to manual aggregation methods or external tools, which were time-consuming and prone to error.
New Feature: Levels
To address this limitation, we have developed the Levels feature. This enhancement expands the geographic scope available within InvestMap, enabling users to seamlessly explore data aggregated at multiple predefined spatial hierarchies:
- Area Cluster: Groups of municipalities aggregated based on spatial and economic criteria.
- Province: The official provincial divisions, allowing for standardized regional analysis.
- Spain: National-level aggregation presenting country-wide data summaries.
Beyond these fixed levels, we have introduced the Custom Level capability. This innovative tool permits users to define an arbitrary spatial boundary by drawing directly on the map interface. The system then dynamically aggregates and presents data on all municipalities encompassed within the user-defined polygon. This feature delivers unprecedented flexibility in spatial analysis, catering to bespoke regional inquiries that do not conform to existing administrative territories.
Technical Considerations
Implementing Levels required enhancements to the spatial data infrastructure underpinning InvestMap. Key improvements include:
- Development of geometric aggregation functions capable of dynamically computing unions of municipalities within arbitrary user-defined polygons.
- Optimization of database queries and caching mechanisms to support real-time responsiveness despite increased computational demand.
- Integration with the existing UI to provide intuitive controls for level selection and custom area drawing.
